List of products by brand CHÂTEAU AMPELIA
Château Ampelia represents a precise and considered vision of contemporary Bordeaux: rigorous organic viticulture on an argilo-calcaire terroir in Castillon, away from the most celebrated appellations, yet driven by a quality of purpose that owes everything to seven generations of accumulated knowledge.
Founded by conviction, rooted in Bordeaux history
Château Ampelia was created in 1999 by François Despagne, seventh generation at the head of Grand Corbin-Despagne in Saint-Émilion. This was not a speculative venture but a deliberate choice: to establish a small, focused property on a plateau above the Dordogne at Saint-Philippe-d'Aiguilhe, in the Gironde, and to work it with the same seriousness that his family has brought to the left bank of the Gironde for well over a century. The estate is co-managed with Murielle Despagne, and from the outset the ambition was clear — to produce a Bordeaux rouge that reflects its terroir honestly rather than chasing appellation prestige.
Terroir and viticulture
The 5-hectare vineyard sits on a south-facing plateau that commands a broad view over the Dordogne valley. The soils are argilo-calcaire — clay-limestone — a combination that provides both water retention in dry summers and the mineral backbone that gives the wines their structure and ageing potential. The exposure is full south, ensuring optimal ripening of the two grape varieties planted here: Merlot, which thrives on these clay-rich soils, and Cabernet Franc, which contributes aromatic lift and freshness to the blend. Together they produce a red Bordeaux of genuine character: structured, precise, and with the kind of quiet authority that comes from a well-understood terroir rather than from technical intervention.
Organic certification: a commitment, not a trend
Château Ampelia began its conversion to organic farming in 2010 — well ahead of the broader movement that has since swept through Bordeaux. Full Agriculture biologique certification followed in 2018, confirming what had already been visible in the vineyard for years: a rejection of synthetic inputs, a respect for soil biology, and a long-term view of what it means to farm well. For François Despagne, organic viticulture is not a commercial positioning but a logical extension of the family's relationship with the land.
The wines of Château Ampelia
The estate produces a single colour across its 5 hectares, focused entirely on the Bordeaux appellation:
- Red (Rouge) — A Merlot-led blend with Cabernet Franc, shaped by the argilo-calcaire soils and south-facing exposure of the Saint-Philippe-d'Aiguilhe plateau. Expect a wine of genuine structure, restrained fruit, and a mineral thread that speaks clearly of its terroir. Suited to the cellar as much as to the table.
Why we have selected Château Ampelia
We have listed Château Ampelia for three reasons that matter to us as a family merchant. First, the coherence of the project: a small, focused estate producing a single red Bordeaux with certified organic viticulture and no concession to fashion. Second, the pedigree behind it — François Despagne brings seven generations of Bordeaux experience to a 5-hectare property, which is an unusual and reassuring combination. Third, the terroir itself: the argilo-calcaire plateau above the Dordogne is genuinely interesting, and the wines reflect it without artifice.
We recommend Château Ampelia to confirmed Bordeaux enthusiasts who value integrity over appellation hierarchy, and to those building a cellar with an eye for organic producers who have been at it long enough to have earned their credentials. At the table, the red pairs well with roast lamb, duck confit, or a well-aged hard cheese.
