List of products by brand DOMAINE ALAIN CHABANON

Based in Montpeyroux at the foot of the Larzac plateau, Domaine Alain Chabanon farms 17 hectares of clay-limestone soils across five communes of the Terrasses du Larzac. Founded in 1992 by Alain Chabanon — an oenologist trained alongside Alain Brumont in Madiran — the estate earned Demeter certification in 2011. Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Carignan anchor the reds; Vermentino and Chenin bring character to the whites. At Halles Quercamps, we selected this estate for its biodynamic integrity, precise élevage and frank mineral expression. A compelling reference for contemporary Languedoc.

Domaine Alain Chabanon stands among the most serious and coherent addresses in the contemporary Languedoc. Established at Montpeyroux since 1992 and Demeter-certified since 2011, the estate embodies a disciplined, uncompromising vision of biodynamic viticulture on the Terrasses du Larzac.

A domain born of conviction, rooted in high-altitude terroir

Alain Chabanon did not inherit his vines. Trained as an oenological engineer, he sharpened both his technical eye and his feeling for terroir working alongside Alain Brumont at Madiran — one of the South-West's most demanding estates — before striking out independently in 1992. His choice of Montpeyroux, in the Hérault, was deliberate: a village perched at the southern edge of the Larzac plateau, where the altitude tempers the Mediterranean heat and the soils — stony, clay-limestone, broken by the calcaire bedrock of the plateau — impose natural discipline on the vine.

Seventeen hectares across five communes

The estate covers 17 hectares spread across five communes of the Terrasses du Larzac, all within the Languedoc appellation. The parcels sit on the hillside slopes and foothills of the Larzac, where the combination of stony clay-limestone soils, altitude-driven diurnal temperature variation and the characteristic garrigue landscape gives the wines their mineral backbone and freshness — qualities rarely associated with the Languedoc of a generation ago. The grape varieties planted reflect both the region and Chabanon's ambitions: Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Carignan for the reds and rosés, Vermentino and Chenin for the whites.

Demeter certification and biodynamic rigour

Domaine Alain Chabanon converted to organic farming well before it became fashionable in the Languedoc-Roussillon, and went further still: the estate has held Demeter biodynamic certification since 2011, one of the stricter international standards in viticulture. Biodynamic preparations, lunar calendar work and a deep attention to soil life govern every decision in the vineyard. In the cellar, the same philosophy applies — interventions are kept to a minimum, élevage is carefully managed, and the wines are given the time they need to express their terroir without cosmetic correction.

The wine range: reds, whites and rosés from the Terrasses du Larzac

Domaine Alain Chabanon produces wines across three colours, all under the Languedoc appellation, drawing on the full range of varieties cultivated across the estate's parcels in the Montpeyroux area and neighbouring communes:

  • Reds — the heart of the range, built on Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Carignan; structured, mineral and age-worthy, with the characteristic freshness of the Larzac foothills
  • Whites — produced from Vermentino and Chenin on the clay-limestone soils; aromatic, precise and less commonly encountered from this part of the Languedoc
  • Rosés — expressive and food-friendly, reflecting the same biodynamic rigour applied across the estate

Why we have selected Domaine Alain Chabanon

At Halles Quercamps, we have been listing Domaine Alain Chabanon because it represents something increasingly rare: a producer who has built a coherent identity from the ground up, without compromise, in a region that has not always rewarded patience. Three reasons stand out. First, the Demeter certification is not a marketing label here — it reflects a genuine, decade-long commitment to biodynamic viticulture that shows in the vitality and precision of the wines. Second, the élevage is handled with a care that gives the reds in particular real ageing potential, making them as suitable for the cellar as for the table. Third, the estate's position on the Terrasses du Larzac — one of the most exciting sub-zones in the Languedoc-Roussillon today — gives the wines a mineral freshness that sets them apart from warmer, lower-altitude Languedoc. We recommend these wines to enthusiasts who enjoy discovering a region through a producer with a clear point of view. They pair particularly well with slow-roasted lamb, aged sheep's cheeses from the nearby Larzac plateau, or robust Mediterranean vegetable dishes.
