Founded in 1990 in Sologny, Saône-et-Loire, Verget is one of the most rigorous négociant houses in the Mâconnais. Driven by Jean-Marie Guffens and named négociant of the year by the Revue du Vin de France in 2020, it has consistently set the standard for Mâcon Chardonnay.

A négociant house built on conviction

Guffens founded Domaine Verget Mâconnais with a clear ambition: to prove that a négociant could produce wines of parcel-level precision and genuine terroir expression. Where others dismissed the Mâconnais, he saw a mosaic of clay-limestone and marly soils capable of yielding Chardonnay of real depth — provided selection was ruthless enough.

Rather than blending for volume, Verget sought specific parcels around Sologny and the Mâcon appellation, working closely with growers to match the house's exacting standards. Since November 2023, Julien Desplans has served as managing director, maintaining those standards under JMG Holding.

Terroir: clay-limestone soils in the Mâconnais

The vineyards supplying Domaine Verget Mâconnais sit on argilo-calcaires, marls, and stony rubble — soils that drain well and impart a mineral backbone to the Chardonnay. The commune of Sologny sits at the heart of this geology, rewarding careful viticulture and attentive winemaking.

Chardonnay is the sole variety, as befits the Mâcon appellation. This focus allows Verget to develop a deep understanding of how the grape behaves across different parcels, vintages, and élevage approaches.
