A Médoc property with roots stretching back to 1766
Few châteaux in Pauillac can point to a documented history spanning more than two and a half centuries. Château la Fleur Peyrabon has been a working wine property since at least 1766, a longevity that speaks to the enduring quality of its terroir at Saint-Sauveur in the Gironde. In 1998 the château was acquired by Patrick Bernard of Millésima, who maintained and developed the estate through the following decades. Then, in September 2022, a significant new chapter opened: the Héritiers Castéja — the family behind Château Batailley, a fifth-growth Pauillac, and Château Lynch-Moussas — took ownership. This transfer brought Château la Fleur Peyrabon into a family group with unrivalled experience of the Médoc's finest appellations and a clear ambition to express the full potential of its terroir.
Terroir: sandy gravels over clay-limestone subsoil
The 7-hectare vineyard sits on graves sableuses — sandy gravel soils — underlain by a clay-limestone subsoil. This combination is characteristic of the left bank of the Gironde: the gravel drains freely, encouraging vines to root deeply in search of water and nutrients, while the clay-limestone beneath provides a mineral reserve that lends structure and freshness to the wines. The result is a terroir well suited to the slow, measured ripening that Pauillac demands.
Grape varieties and winemaking
The vineyard is planted to the classic Pauillac triumvirate: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, as is traditional in the appellation, providing the backbone of dark fruit, firm tannins and the capacity for long ageing. Merlot softens the blend and adds roundness, while Petit Verdot contributes colour, spice and aromatic complexity. Under the stewardship of the Castéja family, the winemaking approach draws on the same exacting standards applied at Batailley and Lynch-Moussas.
