A classified château with nearly three centuries of history

Founded in 1736, Château du Tertre is among the oldest classified estates in the Médoc. Its history spans the full arc of Bordeaux winemaking — from the pre-Revolutionary era through the landmark 1855 Classification, in which it was ranked as a 5th Grand Cru Classé, a status it has retained to this day. In January 2021, the château changed hands when it was acquired by an insurance company, which promptly entrusted its management to the Helfrich family, owners of Grands Chais de France, under a 25-year operating agreement. This transition has injected new energy into the property whilst preserving the classical discipline that a Margaux of this standing requires.

Terroir: a gravel ridge of exceptional character

The vineyard sits on a gravelly ridge of Garonnaise origin, interspersed with glacial sands — a combination that drains freely, warms quickly, and stresses the vine just enough to concentrate flavour without sacrificing finesse. The 52 hectares form a single, uninterrupted block, a rarity in the Médoc that allows for consistent farming decisions across the entire property. The dominant varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot — the classic Bordeaux palette, here expressing the floral, silky character for which the Margaux appellation is celebrated.

Winemaking: classical Bordeaux élevage

The approach in the cellar follows the traditions of the left bank: careful sorting, fermentation by parcel, and an élevage in French oak that allows the structured tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon to integrate with the roundness contributed by Merlot. Both red and white wines are produced at the château, reflecting the breadth of the Bordeaux appellation.
