A château rooted in Médoc history

The origins of Château Beychevelle reach back to 1565. The château's name derives from the old Gascon command baisse-voile — 'lower sail' — a tribute paid by vessels navigating the Gironde to the Admiral of France who resided here in the seventeenth century. This maritime heritage is reflected in its celebrated label to this day.

In 1988, the property was acquired by Grands Millésimes de France (GMF), a joint venture between the Castel group and Suntory. A state-of-the-art winemaking facility inaugurated in 2016–2017 equipped the château with the precision tools required to express its terroir at the highest level while preserving the classical Saint-Julien style.

Terroir: deep Garonne gravels facing the estuary

The 90-hectare vineyard sits on deep Güntz-era Garonne gravel mounds on the plateau bordering the Gironde. This exceptional subsoil provides outstanding drainage and warmth retention, encouraging the slow, even ripening that gives Saint-Julien its characteristic balance of structure and finesse. The estuary exposure moderates temperatures and reduces spring frost risk.

The vineyard is planted principally with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Petit Verdot, producing wines of firm tannic structure, aromatic precision and considerable ageing potential. The estate holds Terra Vitis sustainable viticulture certification.

Winemaking: rigour in the service of terroir

The 2016–2017 winery brought gravity-fed vinification, parcel-by-parcel sorting and a comprehensive barrel cellar, allowing greater precision at every stage of élevage — structured, polished and built for the long term.
