A benchmark Rhône wine of substance and balance

  • This is a wine of genuine richness and harmony. The structure is evident but never austere; the concentration speaks to careful viticulture and measured élevage rather than extraction.
  • Transhumance pairs readily with game, particularly hare and venison, but also suits beef dishes and mature cheeses. Its balance makes it versatile at table.
  • Approachable now, with the fruit forward and the tannins already resolved, yet it will develop quietly over five to eight years, gaining secondary complexity without losing freshness.

Product features : Pierre Gaillard Transhumance 2014 Faugères Rouge 75cl

In the mouth
Powerful and concentrated, yet balanced. The palate is full without being heavy; tannins are ripe and integrated. The finish is clean and persistent, with a lingering peppery note.
On the nose
Initial burst of dark berries—blackcurrant and plum—followed by liquorice and a subtle white pepper spice. The aromatics evolve gently in the glass, revealing mineral undertones.
On the eye
Deep ruby with a slight brick undertone, suggesting maturity without heaviness.
M. Francois
I have long admired Pierre Gaillard's work in the northern Rhône. Transhumance exemplifies his philosophy: wines that express terroir without affectation. This 2014 is at an excellent point—the fruit is still vibrant, the structure evident. It would be my choice for a proper hare à la royale, where its weight and spice complement the richness of the dish. A wine for the table, not the trophy shelf.

DOMAINE PIERRE GAILLARD

Domaine Pierre Gaillard is a wine estate in Malleval (Loire), Northern Rhône Valley. Founded in 1986 by Pierre Gaillard (co-founder of Les Vins de Vienne). Around 25 hectares on steep granitic hillsides. Grapes: Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne. Appellations: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph. Also producing in Faugères (Languedoc).

FAUGERES ROUGE

In the coeur of the Languedoc, halfway between Béziers and the Montagne Noire, the Faugères AOC owes its identity to a soil that is rare on French ground: layered schist. In red, the appellation blends syrah, grenache, mourvèdre, carignan and cinsault on hillsides swept by sea breezes, delivering minerally, mouthwatering wines built to age. At Halles de Quercamps, we've selected three complementary signatures — Abbaye Sylva Plana (biodynamic), Domaine Cottebrune (Pierre Gaillard) and La Tour Penedesses on its volcanic slopes — to give a sharp, no-frills reading of the appellation. A Languedoc apart, ready to be discovered
