The hidden depths of Roussillon revealed

  • From the elevated terroirs of Roussillon, where schist and gneiss soils impart remarkable richness and mineral complexity. This altitude-grown expression captures the essence of the region's geological character.
  • Maison M. Chapoutier's careful assemblage of Mediterranean varieties—Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan—reflects decades of terroir stewardship and commitment to biodynamic principles. A house renowned for respecting the land.
  • A wine of genuine complexity: powerful yet refreshing, with pronounced minerality. Structured and layered, it appeals to those who seek depth and character rather than immediate approachability.

Breeding
12 to 15 months in large wooden vats and concrete tanks to preserve fruit freshness whilst adding structure and elegance
On the eye
Deep, dark garnet with purple undertones. A wine of considerable colour intensity.
On the nose
Powerful bouquet of ripe dark fruits—blackcurrant and blackberry—mingled with forest floor, black pepper, liquorice, and subtle hints of cocoa and leather. Layered and evolving.
In the mouth
Dense and velvety on the palate, with fine-grained tannins and silken texture. Concentrated dark fruit flavours marry with garrigue, white pepper, and a persistent mineral spine. Long, elegant finish with sustained freshness.
M. Francois
A wine of mystery and substance. Chapoutier's Occultum Lapidem marries Roussillon's warmth with remarkable mineral precision, offering intense dark fruit and spice aromatics. The silken structure and extended finish mark it as a serious cellar wine. Pair with roasted meats, game, or spiced Mediterranean fare. Improves considerably with age, revealing greater complexity and refinement over years in bottle.
