VIGNOBLES BRUMONT
Since 1979, Alain Brumont has built at Maumusson-Laguian one of the most authoritative estates in the Sud-Ouest, raising the Madiran appellation to a level of national and international recognition that very few independent growers can claim.
Vignobles Brumont was shaped progressively through two acquisitions that would define a career. In 1979, Alain Brumont inherited Château Bouscassé, then a modest 17-hectare property, and set about restoring its vineyards with uncompromising attention. A year later, in 1980, he acquired the neighbouring Château Montus, at the time largely neglected. Over the following decades, he expanded and consolidated both estates into a single coherent domaine of 300 hectares, one of the largest privately owned wine properties in the Sud-Ouest. The two châteaux retain distinct identities, but share the same exacting standards in the vineyard and the cellar.
The vineyards of Vignobles Brumont sit on steep slopes of 20 to 40 per cent gradient, all oriented due south — an exposure that maximises ripening in this continental corner of the Gers. The soils differ markedly between the two properties. At Château Montus, the dominant profile is reddish rolled pebbles over yellow and red clays, offering excellent drainage and strong heat retention. At Château Bouscassé, the geology shifts to argilo-calcaire with fine white and brown clays, lending a different mineral register to the wines. The principal grape variety is Tannat, the backbone of the Madiran AOC, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for the reds, and Petit Manseng and Petit Courbu for the dry and sweet whites. These are varieties that demand patience — both in the growing and in the glass.
Vignobles Brumont holds HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale), reflecting a sustained commitment to responsible viticulture across the full 300-hectare estate. In 2023, the guide Bettane+Desseauve awarded five stars to both Château Bouscassé and Château Montus — making Vignobles Brumont the only estate in the entire Sud-Ouest to hold that distinction across two properties simultaneously.
The estate produces both red and white wines under the Madiran appellation, with Tannat at the heart of the range:
We have listed Vignobles Brumont because Alain Brumont represents something increasingly rare: a grower who has spent over four decades refining a single appellation rather than chasing trends. The combination of exceptional south-facing terroirs, meticulous élevage, and the structural depth of well-grown Tannat produces reds that reward patience in the cellar — wines that open over five to fifteen years and evolve with genuine complexity. The five-star recognition from Bettane+Desseauve in 2023 is a confirmation, not a discovery, for those who have followed Madiran closely. We recommend these wines to enthusiasts building a cellar with a long horizon, and to those seeking a serious alternative to Bordeaux at the table. At dinner, the reds pair beautifully with duck confit, cassoulet, or aged hard cheeses.
