A château rooted in Bordeaux history

Founded in 1580, Château Suduiraut is among the oldest wine-producing estates in Bordeaux, its viticultural vocation stretching back to the Renaissance. Situated in the commune of Preignac in the Gironde, the château occupies a privileged position within the Sauternes appellation, on gently sloping hillsides and south-facing aspects at altitudes of between 50 and 60 metres — a topography that encourages the development of noble rot and the concentration of sugars that define the appellation's greatest wines.

The estate's gardens were laid out by Le Nôtre, the celebrated landscape architect responsible for the gardens of Versailles under Louis XIV — a detail that speaks to the château's historical standing and the ambitions of its early owners. In 1992, Château Suduiraut was acquired by AXA Millésimes, the wine division of the AXA group, which has since invested steadily in both vineyard management and cellar facilities, while preserving the house style that earned the château its reputation.

Terroir: 91 hectares of graves and deep clay

The vineyard extends across 91 hectares of varied soils — sandy-gravelly graves at the surface giving way to deep clay and gravel subsoils — a combination that provides both excellent drainage and the capacity to retain sufficient moisture through the growing season. This balance is critical in Sauternes, where the interplay of morning mists rising from the Ciron river and warm afternoon sunshine creates the conditions necessary for Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot that concentrates sugars and glycerol in the grapes before harvest.

The vineyard is planted predominantly with Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris — the classic Sauternes trio. Sémillon, with its thin skin and natural susceptibility to botrytis, forms the backbone of the wines, lending richness, weight, and the capacity for long ageing. Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris contribute aromatic lift and freshness, preventing the wines from tipping into heaviness.

Winemaking: patience and precision

Harvest at Château Suduiraut is conducted by successive tries — multiple passes through the vineyard to select only those berries at the precise stage of botrytisation. This painstaking approach, repeated over several weeks, is the foundation of the château's style: wines of great concentration, yet with a clarity and definition that sets them apart from more opulent expressions of the appellation. Élevage is carried out in oak barrels, with the proportion of new wood calibrated to the character of each vintage.
