List of products by brand CHATEAU REAL CAILLOU

Situated at Montagne in the Gironde, Château Real Caillou covers 10 hectares of graves and alluvial soils under the Bordeaux appellation, farmed at a disciplined 35 hl/ha and certified HVE. Managed by the Libourne-Montagne agricultural college since 1969, this château serves both as a working teaching estate for around 300 students each year and as a recognised red-wine producer, vinifying Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the consistency of its restrained yields, the integrity of its classic Bordeaux encépagement, and the rare seriousness of a project that unites vocational training with genuine quality ambition. A grounded, responsible Bordeaux with real character.

Château Real Caillou represents a genuinely uncommon form of viticulture: a 10-hectare, HVE-certified Bordeaux château managed entirely by the Libourne-Montagne agricultural college since 1969, rooted in the commune of Montagne in the Gironde.

A Bordeaux château with a singular story

For more than half a century, Château Real Caillou has occupied a distinctive position on Bordeaux's Right Bank. Owned by the EPLEFPA Bordeaux Gironde, the château is run day-to-day by the teaching staff and students of the Lycée Agroviticole de Libourne-Montagne — one of France's most respected wine and agriculture colleges. Far from being a purely academic exercise, the estate operates as a fully commercial Bordeaux property, subject to the same demands of quality and consistency as any serious private producer. That dual vocation — rigorous training ground and recognised cru — gives Château Real Caillou a character that is genuinely hard to replicate.

Terroir and viticulture

The 10 hectares are planted on a mix of graves and alluvial soils, characteristic of this part of the Gironde, at Montagne — a commune that sits in close proximity to some of the Right Bank's most celebrated appellations. Yields are held to 35 hl/ha, a figure that reflects a deliberate choice to prioritise concentration and typicity over volume. The encépagement is classically Bordelais: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, varieties that express the gravelly subsoil with a pleasing directness. The estate holds HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale), a meaningful commitment to responsible farming practices — all the more noteworthy given that this standard must be maintained year after year in a teaching environment where the workforce changes with each new cohort of students.

Winemaking approach

Vinification at Château Real Caillou is overseen by qualified oenologists and teaching staff, ensuring continuity and technical precision across vintages. The château produces exclusively red wines under the Bordeaux appellation, with an approach that favours balance and drinkability without sacrificing structure. The combination of controlled yields, sound raw material and attentive winemaking results in wines that are honest expressions of their terroir — approachable on release yet with sufficient backbone to reward a few years in the cellar.

The wines from Château Real Caillou

The château's range is focused and coherent, centred on a single colour:

  • Red Bordeaux AOC — a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, vinified from grapes grown on graves and alluvial soils at 35 hl/ha, with HVE certification. Structured, balanced and true to the Right Bank tradition.

Why we have selected Château Real Caillou

At Halles Quercamps, we are drawn to producers who combine technical seriousness with a clear sense of purpose — and Château Real Caillou does precisely that. Three things convinced us: the discipline of the yields at 35 hl/ha, which speaks to a genuine quality commitment rather than a commercial one; the coherence of the classic Bordeaux encépagement on well-suited soils; and the integrity of a project that has been producing recognised wine for over fifty years under the stewardship of an educational institution. This is a château for the confirmed Bordeaux amateur who values substance over label prestige — someone who appreciates knowing exactly where their wine comes from and why it is made the way it is. At the table, these reds pair naturally with roast lamb, duck confit, or a well-aged hard cheese.
