List of products by brand CHATEAU QUATRE RIEUX
Château Quatre Rieux represents a compelling vision of modern Bordeaux: a 20-hectare family château in Sainte-Colombe, farmed under certified organic principles, where the integrity of the terroir takes precedence over stylistic flourish.
A family château rooted in the Gironde
In 2000, the Thibeau family — operating under the EARL T&F — took the helm of this Gironde château, qualifying for the jeune agriculteur scheme that supports new entrants to French farming. Sainte-Colombe, a commune nestled in the Libournais, sits within the broader Bordeaux appellation and offers the kind of quietly expressive terroir that rewards patient, attentive viticulture. From the outset, the Thibeaus brought an energy and a clear sense of purpose to the estate: they were not inheriting a ready-made reputation, but building one, vine row by vine row.
Clay-limestone soils and a classic Bordeaux blend
The 20 hectares of Château Quatre Rieux are planted on argilo-calcaire — clay-limestone soils — which provide excellent drainage and a natural mineral tension that underpins the château's red wines. The encépagement is a classic Bordeaux triumvirate: Merlot for roundness and early approachability, Cabernet Franc for aromatic lift and structure, and Cabernet Sauvignon for backbone and ageing potential. This combination, on these soils, yields red Bordeaux of genuine character: firm but not austere, fruited but not overworked.
Certified organic since 2012
The Thibeau family's commitment to agriculture biologique is one of the defining features of Château Quatre Rieux. The conversion began in 2009 — a deliberate, considered decision taken less than a decade after their arrival — and official organic certification was obtained in 2012. This is not a recent marketing pivot; it is a long-standing commitment to working the land without synthetic inputs, respecting the soil biology that gives the Bordeaux appellation its depth. The certification is maintained rigorously, and it informs every decision in the vineyard, from canopy management to harvest timing.
The wines of Château Quatre Rieux
The château produces exclusively red wines under the Bordeaux appellation. The range is focused and purposeful:
- Bordeaux Rouge — the estate's principal red, blending Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon from clay-limestone soils; honest, terroir-driven, and certified organic.
Why we have selected Château Quatre Rieux
At Halles Quercamps, we are drawn to producers who make clear choices and follow them through with consistency. The Thibeau family's decision to convert to organic viticulture in 2009 — well before it became fashionable in Bordeaux — speaks to a genuine conviction rather than a commercial calculation. Their Bordeaux rouge, grown on clay-limestone soils in Sainte-Colombe, expresses the appellation with a directness and honesty that we find increasingly rare. These are wines made without artifice, and they show it in the glass.
We recommend Château Quatre Rieux to enthusiasts who appreciate a well-made, certified organic Bordeaux at a serious but accessible level — ideal for the cellar, for a relaxed dinner, or as a thoughtful gift. At the table, the reds pair beautifully with roast lamb, duck confit, or a well-aged hard cheese.
