List of products by brand CHATEAU HAUT-VIGNEAU

Situated in Martillac in the Gironde, Château Haut-Vigneau covers 20 hectares of classic Bordeaux graves within the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Built from scratch from 1988 by Éric Perrin on land once belonging to the Baron de Montesquieu in the eighteenth century, the château produces reds from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot alongside whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon — the first white vintage released in 2018. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the coherence of its viticultural project, the typicity of its gravelly terroir, and its commitment to Haute Valeur Environnementale certification. A Pessac-Léognan of genuine character, rooted in the history of the Graves and guided by responsible viticulture.

Château Haut-Vigneau was established in 1988 on the commune of Martillac, in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, where the deep gravel soils of the Graves deliver the natural drainage and mineral precision that define this corner of Bordeaux. A château of relatively recent creation, yet one anchored in a far older story.

A gravelly terroir with deep historical roots

The land on which Château Haut-Vigneau stands is no blank canvas. In the eighteenth century, these very soils belonged to the Baron de Montesquieu — philosopher, jurist, and himself a committed vigneron in the Bordeaux tradition. When Éric Perrin of Vignobles Famille Perrin chose this site in 1988 to build a château from the ground up, he was not simply planting vines: he was resuming a conversation with a terroir that had long understood its own vocation.

Graves soils and the Pessac-Léognan character

Across its 20 hectares, the château sits on the characteristic graves — rounded pebbles and gravel deposits left by the ancient course of the Garonne — that give the Pessac-Léognan appellation its identity. These well-drained, warm soils encourage deep root development, moderate vigour, and a natural concentration in the fruit. The result, in both red and white, is a wine of structure and mineral definition rather than sheer weight. Martillac, at the southern edge of the appellation, is a commune with a long association with serious Bordeaux: Château Smith Haut Lafitte lies nearby, and the gravelly subsoil here is as expressive as anywhere in the Graves.

HVE certification and a responsible approach

Château Haut-Vigneau holds Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification, the French national framework recognising vineyards that meet rigorous standards across biodiversity, plant protection, fertilisation, and water management. For us, this is not a marketing label but a meaningful commitment: it reflects a long-term stewardship of the land that aligns with how we believe fine wine should be made.

The wines: red and white Pessac-Léognan

  • Rouge — A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the classic Pessac-Léognan pairing. The Cabernet brings structure, dark fruit, and the graphite edge characteristic of the Graves; the Merlot rounds the mid-palate and softens the finish. These are wines built for the cellar as much as the table.
  • Blanc — Produced from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, with the white vines planted in 2016 and the first vintage released in 2018. Pessac-Léognan blanc is one of Bordeaux's finest — and most underappreciated — wine styles: the combination of Sauvignon's aromatic precision and Sémillon's texture and ageing potential is compelling. This is a white Bordeaux worth cellaring.

Why we have selected Château Haut-Vigneau

We are drawn to châteaux that have a clear sense of purpose, and Château Haut-Vigneau has that in abundance. Éric Perrin set out in 1988 to create something from nothing on a historically significant terroir, and the results — both red and white — reflect that ambition without ostentation. The HVE certification reassures us that the viticulture is conducted with genuine care for the land. The white, in particular, represents excellent value within an appellation more often associated with its classified reds.

This is a château we recommend to confirmed Bordeaux enthusiasts looking beyond the well-trodden classified growths, and to those discovering the white wines of Pessac-Léognan for the first time. At the table, the rouge pairs beautifully with roast lamb or aged hard cheeses; the blanc is a natural companion to grilled sea bass, scallops, or a fine Comté.
