What followed is, by any measure, remarkable: the château has remained in the hands of the Barton family ever since, passing through successive generations without interruption — a record of continuity unmatched among the 1855 Classified Growths of Bordeaux. Today, the estate is led by Lilian Barton Sartorius, who assumed responsibility in 1983 and has steered the château with the same rigorous, unshowy dedication that has defined the Barton approach across the generations. The soils are classic Garonne gravels — well-drained, heat-retaining, and ideally suited to the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon that dominates the blend. Beneath the gravel, a clay subsoil provides a natural water reserve that sustains the vines through dry summers.
