Château Tour Léognan holds a distinctive position within the Pessac-Léognan appellation: the second wine of a Cru Classé de Graves, drawn from the youngest vines of Château Carbonnieux, it carries at every vintage the character of a Léognan terroir tended with quiet consistency for nearly seven decades.
In 1956, Marc Perrin made the decision to bring together two adjoining properties on the commune of Léognan, in the Gironde. From this union, Château Tour Léognan was born — conceived from the outset as a distinct expression of the Carbonnieux terroir, shaped by the youngest vines on the estate. That founding logic has never wavered: the château exists to give those vines a voice of their own, rather than dilute the grand vin.
The soils here are characteristic of the finest Pessac-Léognan terroir: deep graves — the free-draining gravel beds that have defined the Graves appellation since the Middle Ages — alongside sand, clay, and limestone. This combination encourages the vine to root deeply, moderating yields naturally and concentrating flavour in both the red and white wines. The gravels in particular lend the reds their firm, precise structure and the whites their mineral tension — qualities that distinguish Léognan from the broader Bordeaux landscape.
Today, the fourth generation of the Perrin family oversees both Château Carbonnieux and Château Tour Léognan, maintaining the standards of viticulture and winemaking that have defined the estate across its history. The château holds HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale), reflecting a commitment to responsible farming practices: reasoned use of inputs, preservation of biodiversity, and long-term stewardship of the land. It is a mark that sits comfortably alongside the rigour one expects of a classified Graves property.
The château produces two colours within the Pessac-Léognan appellation, both sourced exclusively from vines under twelve years of age at Château Carbonnieux:
Both wines offer a genuine point of entry into the Carbonnieux universe — made with the same attention to detail as the grand vin, simply from younger plant material.
We have listed Château Tour Léognan for three straightforward reasons. First, the provenance: this is not a négociant label or a loose assemblage, but a wine made exclusively from vines rooted in one of Bordeaux's most respected classified estates. Second, the coherence of the project: since 1956, the Perrin family has maintained a clear distinction between grand vin and second wine, and that discipline shows in the glass. Third, the value proposition: Pessac-Léognan at this level of pedigree, with HVE certification and four generations of family ownership behind it, represents sound buying for the cellar.
We recommend it to enthusiasts seeking an accessible but genuinely serious Bordeaux — whether for a well-chosen gift, a dinner table that calls for something considered, or as a stepping stone towards the Carbonnieux grand vin itself. At table, the red pairs naturally with roast lamb or aged hard cheeses; the white is excellent alongside grilled sea bass or a fine plateau de fruits de mer.
