List of products by brand CHATEAU LA PEYRE

Situated at the lieu-dit Leyssac in Saint-Estèphe, Château Magrez La Peyre covers 8 hectares across two distinct terroirs: gravel soils near Marbuzet for Cabernet Sauvignon, and sandy clay-limestone on the Coutelin ridge for Merlot. Founded around 1946 by baker Raymond Rabiller, the château earned Cru Artisan status in 2006 — the only property in the Saint-Estèphe appellation to hold this distinction — before passing to Bernard Magrez in December 2016. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the singularity of its classification within the appellation, the clarity of its two terroirs, and the rigour brought by its current owner since the acquisition. A Saint-Estèphe of genuine character, firmly rooted in the Gironde.

Château Magrez La Peyre holds a distinction shared by no other property in Saint-Estèphe: it is the appellation's sole Cru Artisan. Established at the lieu-dit Leyssac across 8 hectares of contrasting soils, this is a quietly compelling address we have followed closely since Bernard Magrez took the reins in 2016.

A château born from a craftsman's passion

The story begins around 1946, when Raymond Rabiller — a baker by trade — acquired parcels at Leyssac in the commune of Saint-Estèphe, in the Gironde. His motivation was straightforward: a love of the land and a desire to make wine from one of the Médoc's most celebrated appellations. The estate passed to his son René in 1986, who formalised the project by officially creating the château in 1989. The Rabiller family's most significant achievement came in 2006, when the property was awarded Cru Artisan status — a classification that recognises small, family-run estates of genuine quality. To this day, Château Magrez La Peyre remains the only Cru Artisan in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, a distinction that sets it apart within the broader hierarchy of the Médoc. In December 2016, Bernard Magrez — one of Bordeaux's most engaged proprietors, with holdings across several prestigious appellations — acquired the estate and gave it its current name: Château Magrez La Peyre.

Two terroirs, one appellation

The 8 hectares of vines are divided across two geologically distinct sectors, each matched to the grape variety best suited to it. On the Marbuzet side, deep gravel soils (graves) provide excellent drainage and warmth retention, ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to develop its characteristic structure and aromatic precision. On the Coutelin ridge, sandy clay-limestone soils (argilo-calcaire sableux) give the Merlot the moisture retention and freshness it requires to express roundness and depth. The blend is completed by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, adding complexity and aromatic lift. Yields are maintained at 47 hl/ha, a level that reflects a commitment to concentration without sacrificing the natural expression of the terroir.

Winemaking and style

Under Bernard Magrez's ownership, the approach in both vineyard and cellar has been refined with the precision one expects from a proprietor of his experience. The wines are resolutely in the Saint-Estèphe mould: structured, serious, and built for the medium to long term. The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant assemblage delivers the firm tannins and dark fruit character that define the appellation, while the Merlot component from the Coutelin soils brings balance and accessibility in earlier vintages.

The wine range

  • Château Magrez La Peyre — Saint-Estèphe rouge: the estate's principal wine, a structured Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend from gravel and clay-limestone terroirs, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Suited to cellaring.

Why we have selected Château Magrez La Peyre

At Halles Quercamps, we are drawn to producers whose wines carry a genuine story and a clear sense of place. Château Magrez La Peyre offers both. Its status as the sole Cru Artisan in Saint-Estèphe is not merely a historical footnote — it speaks to a scale and philosophy that distinguishes this château from the larger, better-known names of the appellation. The legibility of its two terroirs, and the way each is matched to the right variety, gives the wines a structural coherence that we find compelling. Since the 2016 acquisition, Bernard Magrez has brought the investment and attention to detail that a property of this calibre deserves. We recommend these wines to confirmed Bordeaux enthusiasts who appreciate appellations beyond the classified growths, and to those building a cellar with an eye for character over celebrity. At table, these Saint-Estèphes pair naturally with roast lamb, aged hard cheeses, or a well-hung côte de bœuf.
