Five centuries of unbroken family presence

Very few Bordeaux properties can claim a lineage as long as this. Château la Croix de Gay has been tied to the same family since 1477, making it one of the oldest estates in Pomerol — an appellation where history is often measured in decades rather than centuries. That continuity is not merely a point of pride; it reflects a deep, accumulated understanding of the land that no amount of investment can shortcut.

In 1998, Chantal Lebreton-Raynaud took over the running of the château, bringing a fresh rigour to a property already steeped in tradition. Then, in 2012, came a significant decision: six hectares were sold to Château L'Évangile — itself owned by Lafite Rothschild — reducing the vineyard to its current 4 hectares. Far from diminishing the estate, this concentration allowed the team to focus entirely on its finest parcels, and the wines gained in focus and personality as a result.

Terroir: Günz and Mindel gravels on the high terrace

The vineyard sits on the haute terrasse and the southern slope of the Pomerol plateau, a position that confers both excellent drainage and good sun exposure. The soils are split equally between Günz gravels — among the oldest and most free-draining in the appellation — and Mindel gravels, which bring a slightly different texture and mineral signature to the blend. Together, they produce wines with a firm but elegant structure, quite distinct from the heavier clay soils found closer to Pétrus.

The grape varieties planted are Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the classic pairing of the Right Bank. Merlot, as one would expect in Pomerol, dominates, lending the wines their characteristic roundness and depth of fruit, while Cabernet Franc provides lift, aromatic complexity, and the backbone needed for ageing.

Winemaking: precision over volume

With just 4 hectares under vine, the approach at Château la Croix de Gay is necessarily hands-on. The reduction in surface area following the 2012 sale has allowed for even closer attention to each parcel, and Chantal Lebreton-Raynaud has used this focus to refine the élevage and tighten the selection. The result is a wine that punches well above its modest volume — concentrated, well-structured, and built to reward patience in the cellar.
