List of products by brand CHATEAU FRANCS MAGNUS

Set on a limestone plateau with a thin clay layer on Bordeaux's right bank, Château Francs Magnus covers 13 hectares in the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation, planted to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Acquired in 2011 by Arnaud Roux-Oulié — who also owns Château Carlmagnus in Fronsac — the château completed its organic conversion, certified from the 2020 vintage, producing exclusively red wines that marry the minerality of limestone with the characteristic roundness of right-bank Merlot. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the rigour of its organic farming, the coherence of its encépagement, and the honest, terroir-driven character of its plateau reds. A Bordeaux address well worth following.

Château Francs Magnus has established itself as one of the more serious addresses in the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation on the right bank — farmed organically since 2011 and vinified without compromise on a distinctive plateau of calcareous clay soils.

A limestone plateau on Bordeaux's right bank

The vineyard of Château Francs Magnus occupies a single, unbroken block of 13 hectares, resting on a limestone plateau covered by a thin layer of clay — a terroir that imparts both structure and a quiet mineral tension to the wines. This is classic right-bank Bordeaux country: the soils drain freely, the plateau exposure ensures good ripening, and the combination of Merlot and Cabernet Franc finds a natural home here. Merlot brings the plush, rounded fruit that defines this side of the Gironde, while Cabernet Franc contributes freshness, aromatic lift, and the kind of fine-grained tannin that gives the wines their backbone and ageing potential.

Arnaud Roux-Oulié: a committed proprietor since 2011

The château was acquired in 2011 by Arnaud Roux-Oulié, who is also the proprietor of Château Carlmagnus in Fronsac — a neighbouring appellation with a comparable right-bank identity. From the outset, Roux-Oulié set about raising the quality and integrity of the estate, with organic conversion as a central ambition. That commitment was formalised with certified organic status achieved from the 2020 vintage, a milestone that reflects both the quality of the terroir and the patience required to farm it without synthetic inputs. Managing two properties across the right bank gives Roux-Oulié a deep understanding of these soils and the grape varieties best suited to them.

Organic viticulture and winemaking philosophy

Château Francs Magnus holds Agriculture Biologique certification, with all wines vinified organically from the 2020 vintage onwards. In the vineyard, this means working the soils, managing canopy by hand, and eliminating synthetic pesticides and herbicides — an approach that demands more of the team but yields a more faithful expression of the limestone plateau. In the cellar, the philosophy is one of restraint: the aim is to let the terroir speak rather than to impose a winemaking style. The result is a range of reds that feel genuinely Bordelais — structured, mineral, and built for the table.

The wines of Château Francs Magnus

The château produces exclusively red wines under the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation, assembled from Merlot and Cabernet Franc grown on the limestone plateau.

  • Red (Bordeaux Supérieur) — Merlot-led with Cabernet Franc, showing red and dark fruit, limestone minerality, and a supple, well-defined structure suited to medium-term cellaring.

Why we have selected Château Francs Magnus

At Halles Quercamps, we are always looking for Bordeaux that offers genuine character without requiring a classified-growth budget. Château Francs Magnus fits that brief precisely. We selected this château for three reasons: the rigour and sincerity of its organic farming, certified from 2020; the coherence of its encépagement — Merlot and Cabernet Franc are simply the right varieties for this limestone-clay plateau; and the honest, food-friendly style of the wines themselves, which reflect their terroir rather than a commercial template. These are reds for the confirmed amateur who values substance over spectacle. They pair naturally with roast lamb, duck confit, or a well-aged hard cheese, and will reward a few years in the cellar. If you appreciate right-bank Bordeaux and want to explore beyond the famous names, this is a château we recommend without hesitation.
