Two ancient Crus Bourgeois reunited

The story of Château du Retout reaches back to at least 1845, the year in which the Bordeaux historian William Franck recorded two distinct Crus Bourgeois on this site in his classification of the Médoc. The two properties were subsequently merged into a single estate, though the vineyard fell into abandonment in the early twentieth century. It was the Kopp family who, from the 1950s, undertook the patient work of reconstituting the château — replanting the vines, restoring the buildings, and re-establishing Château du Retout as a serious address in the Haut-Médoc appellation.

Terroir: a single block of Garonne gravels

The 34-hectare vineyard is planted as a single contiguous block — a relative rarity in the Médoc, where holdings are often fragmented across the commune. The soils vary with the topography: deep Garonne gravels on the upper slopes provide excellent drainage and heat retention, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen fully; clay-gravel soils lower on the slopes bring freshness and structure to the Merlot. This natural complementarity between the two main varieties is one of the defining characteristics of the Cussac-Fort-Médoc terroir, and Château du Retout exploits it with a clear-eyed approach to blending.
