CHAMPAGNE PIPER-HEIDSIECK
Founded in Reims in 1785, Champagne Piper-Heidsieck stands among the oldest Houses in the Champagne appellation. Acquired in 2011 by the Descours family group EPI, it brings together a remarkable historical legacy and a genuinely demanding approach to environmental responsibility, holding HVE, Terra Vitis and B Corp certifications.
It was Florens-Louis Heidsieck who established the House in 1785 in Reims, in the Marne département. According to well-documented tradition, he presented his champagne to Marie-Antoinette at the French court — a founding episode that speaks to the House's early ambition and its place at the heart of Champagne's history. Over the following two centuries, Champagne Piper-Heidsieck built its reputation on the consistent quality of its assemblages and the breadth of its range, earning recognition well beyond French borders.
The House farms 65 hectares of vines across the Champagne appellation, on the chalk and limestone soils that are the hallmark of the region around Reims. These well-drained, mineral-rich terroirs are ideally suited to the three grape varieties at the heart of every Piper-Heidsieck blend: Pinot Noir, which provides structure and red-fruit character; Meunier, which contributes roundness and approachability; and Chardonnay, which brings freshness, tension and the capacity to age. The interplay between these three varieties, carefully managed across the estate's holdings, defines the House style: precise, expressive, and reliably consistent from one cuvée to the next.
Since its acquisition by EPI, Champagne Piper-Heidsieck has pursued a structured and verifiable sustainability programme. The House holds both HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and Terra Vitis certifications, reflecting responsible practices in the vineyard — from biodiversity management to the reduction of chemical inputs. In 2022, the House went further, becoming B Corp certified, a demanding international standard that assesses environmental and social performance across the entire business. This certification was renewed in 2025, confirming that the commitment is ongoing rather than symbolic. For us, these credentials matter: they represent a coherent, long-term vision rather than a marketing exercise.
Champagne Piper-Heidsieck produces a range of blanc and rosé champagnes, all built on the classic Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay blend from the Champagne appellation:
At Halles Quercamps, we have listed Champagne Piper-Heidsieck for three reasons that align with what we look for in any producer we recommend. First, the consistency of the blends: across vintages and cuvées, the House delivers wines that are true to their style — no small achievement at this scale. Second, the seriousness of the environmental credentials: HVE, Terra Vitis and B Corp together represent one of the most complete sustainability frameworks we have seen in Champagne, and the 2025 B Corp recertification confirms this is not a one-off gesture. Third, the depth of history: a House founded in 1785 carries a weight of experience that shows in the precision of its winemaking. We recommend these champagnes to enthusiasts who appreciate a well-structured, food-friendly blanc de noirs style, and to those looking for a reliable, cellar-worthy rosé. They pair beautifully with roast poultry, fine charcuterie, or a well-aged Comté.
