Morgon with the structure and complexity of great Burgundy

  • This Morgon embodies the terroir of one of Beaujolais's finest crus. Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud's traditional winemaking reveals the mineral character and structural depth that distinguish la Roche from lighter Beaujolais expressions.
  • A wine of considerable substance, suited to serious food pairing. Grilled beef, braised lamb, game, and aged cheeses such as Saint-Nectaire find their match in this wine's firm tannins and mineral acidity.
  • La Roche demonstrates why Morgon commands respect among wine enthusiasts. The vineyard's granite-rich terroir produces wines of uncommon complexity that evolve in bottle, developing secondary notes of liquorice and incense.

Breeding
12 to 15 months in oak barrels (mostly used) to refine the tannins without excessive oakiness
On the eye
Deep garnet-red with violet glints. A wine of considerable visual depth, far removed from the pale Beaujolais stereotype.
On the nose
Ripe dark fruits—black cherry, blackberry—combine with a striking mineral signature of cold stone and graphite. Black pepper and violet emerge, with hints of liquorice and incense in more mature bottles.
In the mouth
Powerful and fleshy on the attack, with a firm yet noble tannin structure. The wine has considerable grip and texture. Mineral acidity is beautifully integrated, extending the finish. This is a wine that evolves towards the complexity of fine Burgundy Pinot Noir.
M. Francois
Pair with grilled beef rib, braised lamb shoulder, game birds, or aged cheeses such as Saint-Nectaire. The wine's structure and mineral character make it an excellent companion to dishes with earthy or robust flavours. Allow bottle age for secondary complexity to develop.

DOMAINE JEAN-MARC BURGAUD

Based in Villié-Morgon, Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud farms 19 hectares across the celebrated slopes of the Côte du Py, at the heart of the Morgon appellation. Founded in 1989, the estate gained its true character in 1992 when Jean-Marc — trained in Burgundy and steeped in a vigneron family — took over his father-in-law's vines on these iron- and manganese-rich schists. That Burgundian formation shows: he reads his parcels with the rigour of a climat, coaxing both power and finesse from Gamay Noir on some of Beaujolais's most distinctive terroir. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this estate for the precision of its vineyard work, the typicity of its Morgon, and a consistency of style that places it firmly among the serious addresses of the appellation. A benchmark for the cellar.
