The second wine of Château Phélan Ségur

  • Planted with vines averaging 35 years of age, Frank Phelan benefits from mature vineyard expression. This secondary selection reflects the rigorous standards of the grand vin, offering genuine complexity at a more approachable stage of development.
  • The wine displays an engaging balance of ripe dark fruit character with elegant structural refinement. Rather than seeking power alone, Frank Phelan pursues the harmony between fruit generosity and freshness that defines fine Saint-Estèphe.
  • Whilst this wine will reward cellaring for several years, it matures more quickly than its elder sibling, the grand vin. It offers an opportunity to experience the terroir and winemaking philosophy of Phélan Ségur without the extended commitment required by the château's principal release.

Frank Phelan demonstrates particular affinity with roasted game birds, especially partridge dressed with grapes. The wine's structure and spice notes complement the richness of the meat whilst the freshness cuts through the sauce with admirable precision, making it an excellent choice for the classic French table.

CHATEAU PHELAN SEGUR

Set on the east-facing slopes of Saint-Estèphe overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Phélan Ségur covers 70 hectares of clay-gravel soils and rounded pebbles wrapped in sandy clay, at the heart of the Bordeaux appellation. Founded in 1805 by Irishman Bernard Phelan and now steered by Belgian industrialist Philippe Van de Vyvere since 2018, this château has held Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel status since 2003, producing structured reds built around Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the consistency of its vintages, the precision of its terroir, and the integrity of a classic, well-constructed Bordeaux style. A reliable reference for lovers of Saint-Estèphe.
