DOMAINE GUEGUEN
Domaine Gueguen has established itself, since its founding in 2013, as one of the most considered addresses in the Chablis appellation. Céline and Frédéric Gueguen work 25 hectares from their base in Préhy, in the Yonne, across soils of exceptional Kimmeridgian character.
Céline Gueguen, née Brocard, is the daughter of Jean-Marc Brocard, one of the most recognised names in the Chablis vineyard. After thirteen years working alongside her father at Domaine Brocard, she and her husband Frédéric chose to strike out independently in 2013, building their own estate from the ground up. That decision was not merely a change of address: it represented a deliberate commitment to a more artisanal, parcel-driven approach to Chablis, shaped by everything they had learnt over more than a decade in one of the appellation's leading houses.
The estate covers 25 hectares spread across no fewer than 35 parcels, situated in the communes of Chablis, Chichée, Saint-Bris and Irancy. The soils are predominantly argilo-calcaire kimméridgien — the Jurassic clay-limestone rich in fossilised marine shells, most notably Exogyra virgula, that gives authentic Chablis its signature mineral tension and saline edge. Exposures vary by parcel, with south-westerly slopes around Préhy providing particularly favourable ripening conditions. Yields are deliberately restrained at around 40 hl/ha, a choice that concentrates flavour and preserves the site-specific character that makes parcel-level Chablis so compelling.
Domaine Gueguen is currently engaged in organic conversion, a commitment that reflects both a personal philosophy and a respect for the fragile Kimmeridgian soils they cultivate. Working without synthetic treatments demands greater attentiveness in the vineyard, and the Gueguens have embraced that discipline as integral to their winemaking identity. The estate's grape varieties extend beyond Chardonnay to include Pinot Noir, Sauvignon, Aligoté and Sacy — a breadth that speaks to the diversity of their Yonne terroirs.
We have listed Domaine Gueguen because their wines do exactly what the finest Chablis should: they speak clearly of their terroir. The Kimmeridgian mineral signature is present and unforced, the fruit is precise rather than opulent, and the winemaking never overwhelms the site. The estate's organic conversion adds a further layer of integrity that we find increasingly important in our selection. We recommend these wines to enthusiasts who seek honest, terroir-driven white Burgundy — wines that reward a few years in the cellar as much as they satisfy at the table. At the dinner table, look to the Chablis alongside oysters, grilled sole, or a well-aged Comté; the Irancy will sit comfortably with roast guinea fowl or a charcuterie board from the Burgundy region.
