In the mouth
Full and immediate on the palate, dominated by ripe citrus notes. Excellent freshness and a finish of considerable length, characteristic of the finest Champagnes.
On the nose
Refined and elegant, opening with preserved citrus and apricot, followed by notes of spiced bread. The subtle oak influence develops into a remarkable aromatic complexity.
On the eye
Brilliant pale gold with fine, vibrant bubbles forming an elegant, persistent cordon
Breeding
This cuvée is aged 6 months in renewed oak barrels (demi-muids), with one-sixth replaced annually, and rests in bottle for a minimum of 3 years.
M. Francois
Roy Soleil presents an intriguing contrast: creamy, intense aromas beautifully balanced by the crisp minerality of Grand Cru Chardonnay. A Champagne of genuine character that rewards contemplation.

CHAMPAGNE PHILIPPE GONET

At the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of Champagne's most revered Grand Cru villages, Champagne Philippe Gonet has been producing wines of rigour and mineral precision since 1830. This is a House we follow closely at Halles Quercamps, and one we recommend without hesitation to lovers of great Blanc de Blancs.

Nearly Two Centuries of History on Chalk

The Gonet family story begins in 1830, when Pierre-Charles Gonet established the House — making it one of the older family-owned Champagne producers still in operation today. The House settled permanently at Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in 1910, drawn by the village's extraordinary chalk terroir and its standing at the very summit of the Champagne appellation hierarchy. Today, Pierre and Chantal Gonet have led the estate since 2021, bringing renewed energy and a clear environmental ambition to a legacy built over generations.

A Terroir Like No Other: Deep Chalk and Belemnite Fossils

Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is rated 100% in the Champagne échelle des crus — the highest classification the appellation awards. The village's reputation rests almost entirely on its chalk: extraordinarily deep, in places reaching down to 40 metres, and rich in marine fossils known as belemnites. These ancient cephalopods, whose fossilised remains are embedded throughout the subsoil, inspired the name of the House's prestige cuvée. The chalk acts as a natural reservoir, regulating water supply through the driest summers and imparting the cool, saline minerality that defines the finest Chardonnays grown here. The House's 19 hectares are planted across east- and south-facing slopes, maximising ripeness while preserving the freshness that is the hallmark of Mesnil. The chalk cellars beneath the House date to 1783 — predating the founding of the House itself — and provide ideal conditions for long, slow ageing on lees.

HVE Certification and Organic Conversion

Champagne Philippe Gonet holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification and has committed its vineyards to full organic conversion since 2021. This is not a marketing posture: the decision reflects a long-term view of the terroir and a determination to pass healthy soils to the next generation. The three Champagne varieties — Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier — are cultivated with close attention to vine balance, and the winemaking in the chalk cellars prioritises the expression of place over technical intervention.

The Wine Range

The House produces a focused range of Champagnes, all rooted in the chalk terroir of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and the surrounding Côte des Blancs. The range spans:

  • Blanc de Blancs — Chardonnay-driven cuvées expressing the saline, citrus-edged minerality of Grand Cru chalk
  • Assemblage cuvées — blending Chardonnay with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier for structure and breadth
  • Prestige cuvée Bélemnite — the House's flagship, named after the fossilised marine creatures found in the chalk cellars, aged for extended periods on lees
  • Rosé — produced in small quantities, combining the freshness of Chardonnay with the body of Pinot Noir

Why We Have Selected Champagne Philippe Gonet

At Halles Quercamps, we look for producers who express their terroir honestly and who take a long view of their vineyards. Champagne Philippe Gonet meets both criteria. The combination of a Grand Cru address at Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, chalk cellars dating to 1783, and a sincere commitment to organic conversion since 2021 sets this House apart from the crowded Champagne landscape. The wines are precise and mineral — not built for immediate impact, but for those who appreciate depth and length over easy exuberance. We recommend this House particularly to enthusiasts who already have a fondness for Blanc de Blancs and who wish to explore what truly great chalk terroir contributes to a wine. At table, these Champagnes are superb with oysters, grilled sole, or a well-aged Comté — but equally rewarding on their own, given time to breathe in the glass.
