Burgundy (Bourgogne) divides opinion and provokes devotion in equal measure. It produces, some argue, the greatest red wines in the world — and certainly some of the most expensive. Yet Burgundy also offers remarkable value at the village and regional level if you know where to look. Our team has spent decades navigating this complex region to bring you both the iconic names and the hidden gems.

Understanding the Burgundy Hierarchy

Burgundy's quality is expressed through a precise pyramid system:

Grand Cru (1.5% of production): The absolute pinnacle — 33 individual vineyards with their own AOC, producing wines of extraordinary quality and price. Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Chambertin, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot — these are wines of legend.

Premier Cru (11% of production): Over 600 individual named vineyards within village appellations, designated as superior sites. The best Premier Crus can rival Grand Crus in quality and command serious prices, yet often represent better value than Grand Crus from lesser vintages.

Village Appellation (36%): Wines from the best villages of the Côte d'Or — Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Pommard, Volnay, Nuits-Saint-Georges. These offer genuine Burgundy character at accessible-to-premium prices.

Bourgogne Rouge (52%): The widest appellation, covering the entire region. Quality varies enormously — from thin, dilute wines to surprisingly impressive efforts from good domaines' declassified fruit.

The Key Villages of the Côte de Nuits

Gevrey-Chambertin: The most powerful and structured style. Nine Grand Crus including Chambertin. Complex, age-worthy wines demanding patience.

Morey-Saint-Denis: Between Gevrey and Chambolle, producing wines that blend power and elegance. Undervalued relative to its neighbours.

Chambolle-Musigny: The most ethereal, floral, and delicate Burgundy reds. Musigny Grand Cru is considered by many the greatest red Burgundy.

Vougeot: One vineyard, Clos de Vougeot (50.6 hectares), divided among over 80 owners — quality varies wildly.

Vosne-Romanée: Home to Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and Grands-Échézeaux. The most coveted — and expensive — village in Burgundy.

Nuits-Saint-Georges: Robust, earthy, structured. No Grand Crus but excellent Premier Crus delivering good value relative to neighbours.

The Côte de Beaune for Red Wine

While famous for whites (Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet), the Côte de Beaune produces outstanding reds:

Pommard: Rich, powerful, structured. Premier Crus Rugiens and Épenots are classics.

Volnay: Elegant, perfumed, silky — often described as the most feminine Côte de Beaune red.

Savigny-lès-Beaune and Chorey-lès-Beaune: Excellent value, underrated appellations producing honest, approachable red Burgundy.

Value Beyond the Côte d'Or

→    Côte Chalonnaise: Mercurey (the best for reds), Givry, and Rully offer genuine Burgundy character at significantly lower prices.

→    Mâconnais: Limited reds, mostly Gamay-based, but some excellent Pinot Noir emerging.

→    Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits/Beaune: The hillside villages above the Côte d'Or, producing increasingly interesting wines.
