The Loire Valley rarely appears on this list — and that is precisely what makes it such a rewarding hunting ground for those who know. Chinon: The Capital of Loire Red Wine

Chinon is the Loire's most celebrated red wine appellation, built on the chalk-and-tuffeau limestone hillsides above the Vienne river. Cabernet Franc (known locally as Breton) is the sole permitted red variety, and in Chinon it achieves a distinctive combination of herbaceous elegance, red fruit character, and mineral precision that is entirely its own.

The best Chinon wines — from serious domaines farming old vines on the hillside vineyards — need 5-8 years to reveal their full complexity. Young Chinon can be served slightly cool; mature examples reward careful decanting.

Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil

Across the Loire river from Chinon, Bourgueil and its satellite Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil produce Cabernet Franc wines of a slightly different character. The gravelly "tuffeaux" soils produce more structured and age-worthy wines than the sandier soils of the river plain. The best Bourgueil can age for 15-20 years.

Saumur-Champigny

Perhaps the Loire's most approachable and versatile red, Saumur-Champigny produces fresh, fruit-forward Cabernet Franc wines with excellent value. In warm years, these wines take on genuine richness and depth while retaining the Loire's characteristic freshness.

Sancerre Rouge

Often overshadowed by the white Sancerre (Sauvignon Blanc), the red wine version — 100% Pinot Noir — is a fascinating and undervalued wine. Light, delicate, and highly perfumed, it shares the flinty mineral character of white Sancerre while showing classic Pinot Noir fruit.

Anjou Rouge and Anjou-Villages

From the western Loire comes a range of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines under the Anjou umbrella. Simple Anjou Rouge offers honest value; the elevated Anjou-Villages designation indicates superior vineyard sites and more serious winemaking.
