French Grenache Wines — Southern Warmth, Expertly Selected

Grenache (Garnacha in Spain) is the most widely planted red grape in the Southern Rhône and much of Languedoc-Roussillon. While often used in blends, the best examples of pure Grenache — or Grenache-dominated wines with minimal additions — reveal a grape of extraordinary character: warm, spiced, generous, and capable of great complexity and longevity.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Grenache's Greatest Stage

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most celebrated appellation of the Southern Rhône and the spiritual home of Grenache in France. The famous galets roulés (large rounded stones) that cover the vineyards absorb heat during the day and radiate it at night, ensuring perfect ripeness. At its best, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a wine of extraordinary richness and complexity: ripe red and dark fruits, dried herbs, pepper, leather, and a distinctive warmth that speaks of the Provençal sun.

Grenache in the Wider Rhône and Beyond

Gigondas — Grenache dominates in this excellent-value alternative to Châteauneuf, producing powerful, age-worthy reds with a distinctive garrigue character.

Vacqueyras — Similar in style to Gigondas, often more approachable and available at even better prices.

Lirac — Increasingly fashionable, producing excellent Grenache-based reds just across the Rhône from Châteauneuf.

Tavel — Technically a rosé appellation, but Grenache is equally important here in producing France's most celebrated rosé wines.

Languedoc-Roussillon — Grenache appears extensively throughout this vast region, both as a varietal wine and in blends. The Roussillon — particularly Collioure — produces some of the most concentrated and powerful French Grenache.

Tasting Notes

Classic French Grenache shows:

→    Medium-deep ruby colour, often with garnet and orange hues at the rim

→    Aromas: ripe red cherry, raspberry, strawberry jam, dried herbs, pepper, leather

→    Palate: full body, moderate tannins, warming alcohol, generous fruit

→    Notes of garrigue (wild herbs: thyme, rosemary, lavender)

→    With age: complexity of dried fruit, leather, spice, and earthy minerals
