Rhône Valley Red Wines — North to South, Power to Elegance

The Rhône Valley stretches over 200 kilometres from Lyon in the north to Avignon in the south, and its two sub-regions produce red wines of entirely different character. The Northern Rhône is cool, steep, and dominated by Syrah. The Southern Rhône is wide, sunny, and built on Grenache-dominated blends. Together they represent one of France's most exciting and diverse wine regions.

Northern Rhône: Granite, Syrah, and Mastery

Côte-Rôtie — "The Roasted Slope" — is perhaps the most elegant and complex of all Northern Rhône wines. Grown on dramatically steep granite terraces above Ampuis, these Syrah wines (often with a touch of white Viognier) are perfumed, silky, and age magnificently. The two sub-zones — Côte Blonde (lighter, elegant) and Côte Brune (more powerful, structured) — produce distinct styles that serious collectors seek out.

Hermitage is the most powerful and longest-lived Northern Rhône red. The granitic hill of Hermitage produces dense, inky wines that are formidably tannic in youth but develop extraordinary complexity with 10-20 years' age.

Crozes-Hermitage surrounds Hermitage and offers far better value. The best plots on the granite slopes produce wines that can approach Hermitage quality at a fraction of the price. An excellent entry point into Northern Rhône Syrah.

Cornas produces the most rustic and uncompromising Northern Rhône wines — 100% Syrah from steep granite slopes, demanding age but delivering extraordinary complexity and character for the patient.

Saint-Joseph is the most accessible and charming Northern Rhône appellation — lighter, more fragrant, and earlier-drinking than its neighbours.

Southern Rhône: Sun, Stone, and Generous Blends

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most celebrated Southern Rhône appellation and one of the world's great red wine zones. The famous galets roulés (large rounded stones) cover many vineyards, reflecting heat and ensuring ripeness. The blend typically centres on Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and up to 13 other varieties permitted. The greatest examples age for 20+ years.

Gigondas — in the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail — produces powerful, age-worthy reds dominated by Grenache and Syrah. Significantly underpriced relative to Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Vacqueyras and Lirac offer further excellent value from Grenache-dominated blends.

Côtes du Rhône Villages — a step up from basic Côtes du Rhône — includes dozens of named villages producing serious, characterful wines at very competitive prices. Look for Cairanne (recently elevated to its own appellation), Rasteau, Roaix, and Séguret.

Ventoux and Luberon: The Provençal edge of the Southern Rhône, producing lighter, fresher reds ideal for summer drinking.
